Camp SNAP (Science Nature Adventure Program)

Camp SNAP is a summer science nature adventure program that offers Manatee County Title 1 students countless opportunities to explore the wonders of nature as well as learning about personal stewardship of the earth. Invited fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth grade students participate in the weeklong camps, which run June 5th through June 22nd. Students travel daily to field trips sites such as Myakka River State Park, Coquina Beach/Leffis Key, Robinson Preserve and the Florida Aquarium. As a part of the exciting learning activities lead by dynamic teachers and volunteers, the students hike, kayak, remove exotic species and learn about their carbon footprint. Students also build oyster mats, examine protists under microscopes, explore aquatic animals by dip netting, study erosion, density, learn about the effect of humans on the environment, and reflect, inquire and immerse themselves in all things science-related. Title 1 Camp SNAP partnered with the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN) and WayneAdventures to offer the kayaking experience at Robinson Preserve. Other partnerships include Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources for oyster mat construction and with Florida State Parks to learn about invasive plant species.
