Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision

The mission of the Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind is to “maximize independence and provide employment opportunities for persons who are blind or visually impaired”. The Transition Program specifically works with youth ages 14-21 who are blind or visually impaired. The program was designed to prepare students for post-secondary options, such as college, technical school, or work. Through the Transition Program, students learn and enhance skills related to independent living, career exploration, job readiness, self-determination, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, and problem solving.

Work exploration and increasing job readiness skills go beyond researching a variety of jobs and careers. The Transition Program also offers varied activities after school, on the weekends, and during the summer to develop self-esteem, self-confidence, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, responsibility, communication skills, and a social network. Existing activities include work/volunteer experiences, a student-run fundraising business, giving back to local/national charities, kayaking, personal fitness, and team sports designed for individuals with visual impairments, such as goalball, beep kickball, and Showdown.
