Future of Hunting in Florida: Telogia

For the past eleven years, FHF has hosted approximately 90 weekend youth hunts under the FWC Youth Hunting Program at various private leases and lands in both North and North/Central Florida. And for the past two years, FHF has begun its own New “Old” Hunters Program by hosting a total of six weekend mentored hunts. FHF’s New Hunters Program provides opportunities for both young and old to learn to hunt in a safe, mentored weekend whereby hunting safety is taught (including hunter safety field day on Friday afternoon), proper aging and sexing of deer, proper shot placement, game cleaning and processing, and even recommended ways for preparing the meal. Saturdays include shooting clay targets and a talk by an FWC officer about ethics and hunter safety. FHF recently received an $8,000 grant from the Turner Foundation for the purchase of a used tractor so that FHF may teach New Hunting participants about proper management of the land and increasing the carrying capacity. FHF has also been the recipient of grants for the last five years from the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida to help fund FHF’s New Hunters Program.
