While evidence of the first bow and arrow dates back roughly 10,000 years ago, archery has never been more popular than it is today. Thanks to archery being featured in blockbuster movies and TV shows, archery has been catapulted into the mainstream and has especially taken flight with kids.

There are several reasons why archery has caught fire. It’s an activity that anyone can succeed at. It’s not about strength. It’s more about focus and good form. Archery also is one of the most accessible activities for people with disabilities. It’s also fun, safe and a great way to socialize with friends and family. Plus, when new shooting skills are mastered, participants get a big boost in self-confidence.

Getting Started

Those who want to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow have several options to choose from. Archery enthusiasts can take up target archery, field archery, 3D archery, bowhunting or bowfishing. Each of these activities is slightly different. Some can be done indoors while others are definitely outdoor pursuits. The types of bows, arrows and targets, and distance to the target also vary for each of these activities. So there really is something for everyone!

Archery can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. You can start out simple with a bow, arrows and targets and work your way up. With lots of practice and a desire to improve you could even be a US Archery team member competing in the Olympics.

Whatever type of archery interests you, get some training and then go outdoors and let a few arrows fly.
