General Information

Our school field trips and classroom visits are free for students – rain or shine. Minimum class size is 10 students and the maximum field trip amount at one time is 20, however a maximum of 40 students is possible if split into 2 separate sessions. Classroom sessions do not have a maximum limit. TYCC has a 1:10 adult to youth ratio for all land-based activities and a 1:5 adult to youth ratio for water-based activities. All lessons and activities for elementary are divided into upper and lower categories; Lower Elementary representing 1-3 grade and Upper Elementary representing 4-5 grade. We provide the instructors, lessons, necessary equipment and to ensure your time at Tenoroc will be a memorable one.

In-School Programs (~1 hour)

Grades 1-5

Fashion a Fish (Grades 1-3):
Students will be able to understand basic fish adaptations. They will create and design their own fish based on different types of adaptations.

First Impressions (Grades 1-3):
Students will distinguish between reactions to animals based on myths/stereotypes vs factual information. They will recognize the value of animals’ contributions to ecosystems, even those that people sometimes respond to with fear.

Avian Art (Grades 1-3):
Students will be able to understand basic bird adaptations. They will create and design their own bird based on different types of adaptations.

Wetland Metaphors (Grades 4-5):
Students will be able to describe the characteristics of wetlands and their importance to humans and wildlife using visual guides to make connections.

Time Lapse (Grades 4-5):
Students will describe successional changes in an ecosystem and the factors that affect these changes, and relate species diversity to successional habitat changes.

Bird Friend or Foe (Grades 4-5):
Students will learn about difficulties birds face when navigating a world changed by humans. They will discover how to take simple actions to protect birds from dangers and home and outside.

Grades 6-8

Urban Waterway Check Up:
Students will identify and describe criteria used to gauge the health of a waterway, analyze the health of a hypothetical waterway, predict how human actions affect the health of a waterway, and write a plan for improving the health of a waterway.

Migration Barriers:
Students will describe possible impacts on wildlife migration patterns because of human activities; identify various factors involved in a wildlife management issue; and evaluate alternatives in a complex issue involving wildlife.

Who was that Masked Bird?: Students will analyze descriptions of birds as well as the structure and contents of bird field guide to identify different species. Students will explain reasons why people watch and identify birds.

Grades 9-12

The Glass Menagerie:
Students will describe the characteristics of oligotrophic and eutrophic aquatic habitats, emphasizing the effects of nutrient loading. Note: This activity consists of 4 weeks of classroom observation.

Migration Barriers:
Students will describe possible impacts on wildlife migration patterns because of human activities; identify various factors involved in a wildlife management issue; and evaluate alternatives in a complex issue involving wildlife.

Council Consensus:
Through a role-playing exercise, students will assess multiple priorities and viewpoints in order to formulate a land-use plan. Students will explain the rationale for the plan, including the plan’s benefits to birds and other wildlife. Note: This activity requires student preparation prior to classroom visit.
